Supta Padangusthasana 3 (Reclined Big Toe Pose 3)

Reclined Big Toe Pose

Level: Intermediate

Supta = sleeping, lying down or reclined. Pada = foot. Angustha = big toe.

Organizing the pose

    • Come into Supta Padangusthasana I (Reclined Big Toe Pose I) with the right leg raised.
    • Take hold of either the right big toe with the right hand, or both ends of the belt with the right hand. Place the left hand on the left thigh.
    • Roll the right leg out in the hip socket so that the leg turns out and the outer hip slims away from you.
    • Bend the leg, dropping the shin down, but taking care not to close the knee joint more than 90°.
    • Take the crook of the left elbow around the right ankle and pull the shin in parallel to the chest.
    • Reach the right arm behind the head and grab hold of the right big toe with the first two fingers and thumb of the right hand. Stretch the left leg out. Hold this position for several breaths.
    • Release and return to Supta Padangusthasana I (Reclined Big Toe Pose I).
    • Repeat the pose on the other side, taking care to hold it for the same length of time.
